The Go for Gold Education Development Programme (EDP) reached another exciting milestone this October as the annual Ukhetho took place at Cape Town High School. This important event marks a key transition for our Grade 12 learners, who are nearing completion of Phase 1 of the Go for Gold Education-to-Employment Programme and preparing to enter Phase 2 – the Workplace Learning Internship (WLI) in 2026.
The Ukhetho, which means “the selection” in isiXhosa, is a vital step in each learner’s Go for Gold journey. It offers Grade 12 students the opportunity to engage directly with Go for Gold’s industry partners through formal interviews. These interviews determine placement for the year-long paid internships that make up the next phase of the programme.
This year, we were proud to welcome representatives from H&I Construction, Roadmac Surfacing, Amandla Construction, Martin & East, Metapipe, Civils 2000, Civils 87, R+N Master Builders, Tuboseal, W Unser Construction, and Stefanutti Stocks — all of whom took time to meet and interview our students.
Company representatives shared glowing feedback, noting that our students demonstrated strong communication, confidence, and professionalism, reflecting the success of Go for Gold’s comprehensive academic and leadership development support.
“We were so impressed by the learners’ maturity and their understanding of the industry. It’s clear that Go for Gold is preparing them exceptionally well,” said one participating company representative.
For the students, the Ukhetho is not just about interviews — it’s a powerful affirmation of how far they’ve come. Over two years in the EDP, they’ve balanced schoolwork with Saturday tutoring in Mathematics and Physical Sciences, leadership development, career guidance, and exposure to the construction and engineering industries.
As they now await placement announcements for 2026, these learners are one step closer to their dreams of building meaningful careers in South Africa’s built environment sector.
Go for Gold extends heartfelt thanks to all our partner companies, whose continued commitment makes this education-to-employment journey possible, and to our students, whose dedication and perseverance continue to inspire us every day.
Together, we’re building brighter futures — one learner, one opportunity, one career at a time.
