As part of our education to employment programme,  Go for Gold’s annual Ukhetho matched  Go for Gold students with their future sponsors and employers during an interview session, which allows companies to meet and select those students they feel are best suited for their business.

This year the Go for Gold Ukhetho, which  took place at Ravensmead High School, was attended by 13 construction and engineering companies, whose HR personnel spent the morning interviewing 44 Grade 12 learners who have almost completed Phase 1 (Grade 11 and 12) of the Go for Gold programme.

“I was feeling very nervous when I first arrived, but my interview went well and I’m looking forward to the next one,” said Grade 12 student Yaseera Vitran from Oval North High School.

During Phase 1 of the Go for Gold programme, selected students from disadvantaged schools, are given weekly extra tuition in Maths, Science and Life Skills to help them achieve a Bachelor’s Pass in Matric and develop the self-confidence needed to succeed.

After the Ukhetho they are matched up with a partner company and offered a one year paid internship (Phase 2), which precedes the start of their tertiary studies, usually in engineering or a related field.

Construction company Burger and Wallace who joined as a Go for Gold partner company in early 2015, attended the 2015 Ukhetho for the first time.

“I think Go for Gold is a fantastic programme.  We already take students from CPUT once they graduate but recognise the value in giving new matriculants the opportunity to work in the industry for a year before they start their studies.  By going through this process they will know what to expect from their future career and are likely to stay in the sector, which is good for retaining expertise in the built environment,” said Colin Budge Director of Burger and Wallace.

Go for Gold alumnus Khanyiso Swaphi who works for Murry and Roberts as a junior quantity surveyor attended the day to offer encouragement and support for the young interviewees.

“I remember very well being in their shoes and I am here today to support and encourage them to grab hold of the opportunity they are being given by Go for Gold.  The personal growth and opportunity to improve my academics has helped me secure a position with Murray and Roberts, where I am proud to be working on important building projects and entrusted with responsibilities.   Thanks to Go for Gold I was encouraged to be the person I can be and to succeed.”
